TMC Global Newsletter - August 2025

Like we said last month, summer doesn’t seem to be slowing us down one bit.

When the sun was shining outside, our community stayed busy – supporting the record-breaking Next Top Threat Model contest at DEFCON, seeing the DACH chapter bring together some of the most dedicated threat modelers for an intimate summer meetup.

And…we’re closing out the season with a BIG milestone - publishing the first-ever community-run State of Threat Modeling report. :tada: It’s packed with insights, trends, and benchmarks (from 60+ organizations) that help you assess how your threat modeling work stacks up - and where to go from here.

AND because we’re not about to let autumn sneak in quietly, we’ve got a full lineup of events coming your way next month.

But first, here’s the August Round-Up!

We started with a poll

Have you read the SOTM report yet?
  • Yes – cover to cover!
  • Skimmed it, planning a deeper dive soon
  • Not yet, but it’s on my list
  • Wait… there’s a report? (where’s the link again?)

State of Threat Modeling Report 2024-2025

The threat modeling industry has gone years without its own industry report–until now. Thanks to our community’s collective effort, the inaugural State of Threat Modeling (SOTM) report is here. Backed by data from 60+ organizations, it offers real-world benchmarks to help security professionals assess, refine, and improve their threat modeling practice. Download the report here.

This initiative was driven by two of our star community members,@dave and @rewtd. With over a decade of threat modeling experience each, they combined deep practitioner insight with rigorous research and data analysis to make this report possible.

Event Highlights

TMC x NTTM (DEFCON)

We proudly support the legendary ‘Next Top Threat Model’ (NTTM) contest at DEFCON (our member @AppSecSeanner was one of the organizers!)

The contest smashed records with the highest number of threat submissions yet. Stickers were so popular that the team had to ration them to last until day two. (A true threat modeling scarcity scenario!) We’ll be working with the NTTM team to share highlights soon.

TMC DACH tmc-dach

While most people were chasing summer sunshine, our DACH chapter kept the community fire burning!

@hewerlin @RonMK @Laxarella hosted a small, cozy meetup to review the top submissions from the TMC Hackathon ’25. @agota.daniel shared a judge’s perspective, sparking deep discussions that only a close group can foster. Intimate, insightful, and very ‘community!’

Check out the event highlights here.
